These images show my making process on a large wall art piece. The most difficult part is the placing of the birds as I like to try to create a balance between the birds and flowers and the space around them so they don’t feel crowded. These birds of paradise have a lot of different colours on their plumage and applying this so it blends takes a lot of concentration.
The main thing I fight against creating larger pieces is the drying out process which takes place each time I uncover the clay to work on it. Over the years I have developed many different ways of keeping the clay damp enough to work on. If it dries out too much the slip colour can ping off during the final drawing stage ruining what could have taken days off work.
