This wall art piece has been thrown on the wheel using a very white stoneware clay and while it’s still damp coloured clay slips have been applied to the surface. I have then taken a sharp tool and drawn the outline of the birds and orchids and carved back the clay surface creating lovely 3D effect.
The decoration on the raggiana birds and orchids have been drawn on using a technique called sgraffito with extra colours being added to highlight the birds feathers and orchids colour. Only the birds have been glazed giving it one a lovely shimmer. It took a lot of research to get this piece just right and I contacted a travel firm in Papua New Guinea to check I had the right orchids to go with these magnificent birds. This piece shows three males displaying to a female and has also been decorated across the back allowing the design to flow and continue.
Once completed these are left to dry for a few weeks and fired twice in an electric kiln during which I have selectively glazed the main themes leaving the rest of the decoration matt.
All of my wall art pieces have a unique hanging system designed by myself which includes a D ring and four rubber clear feet so they are all ready to hang on your chosen wall. Each piece I create is unique and takes many hours to complete by hand.
